BRIEF SITE OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Austin Texas based for Austin and surrounding areas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu site. Hopefully this will help new people find a BJJ home and help all BJJ practitioners keep up to date on upcoming seminars and tournaments. I grew up in a small town where word of mouth was the biggest form of advertisement that you could find at any of the two gas stations there, no really only two. The internet is now the norms for the old school word of mouth so here is mine and hope this benefits everyone.
1. Local Academies – This is the BJJ gyms by area in Austin with links to their respected sites. Note : It is up to you where you train and how far you go, the more you go the better you will be.
2. Seminars – A place to find what is happening where from seminars to specific open mats or special events within the Martial Arts world here in Austin.. The basic info will be provided but you will need to follow up with the originator of the seminars for greater details and questions. A quick link will be provided to the respected school for Austin and surrounding areas.
3. Tournaments – An up to date posting of tournament information that is happening in and around Texas. You will have a site link provided to get further info on details and locations. Always look up tournament rules as some slightly vary from one to another and ask your Professor if you have any questions they will know best
4. Get Gear – Always ask your attending home school first about equipment needed. Some require matching uniforms to the BJJ School or the team logo patch to be purchased. However a lot is bought online and I will include basic shipping info from these places and a brief over view about them. (Always look at sizing charts different brands are slightly different than other for fit and obey washing instructions lol.)
5. Other Pages – This page is for groups or local business’s who are directly or indirectly linked into an aspect of BJJ. Also here might be benefits to help Austin grow as a whole. Please check it out as this is about not only supporting BJJ, Judo but the people who's lives are involved directly and indirectly. There are blogs, event photographers, massage therapist that are all involved in BJJ. Short version if you need to chose someone chose them as it makes sure they support BJJ as well.
The Evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
In 1914 a Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu master named Mitsuo Maeda traveled to Brazil. In return for help from a Brazilian politician, Maeda taught jiu-jitsu to one of his sons, Carlos Gracie, who then shared these techniques with his brother Helio. These brothers went on to further refine the art via constant no-rules competition and practice, developing what would come to be known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Subsequently all varieties of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu evolved from there. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) diverged from traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu because of its unique approach to applying the techniques. Instead of relying on elements like speed and strength, BJJ uses the principles of leverage and position in its application to overcome an opponent. Since the BJJ practitioner is not trying to match the speed or strength of his/her opponent, it is easier for a much smaller person who understands BJJ to control and defeat a larger or stronger opponent. BJJ teaches its practitioners a variety of chokes and joint locks that can be used to subdue an attacker. BJJ is different than other martial arts because the need for striking an opponent is minimized or often eliminated. The BJJ player aims to “close the distance” between him/herself and the opponent to get in close and bring the situation down to the ground, where grappling techniques can be employed most effectively using leverage. BJJ views this as practical theory, since most physical conflicts or attacks end up on the ground.
